How to pay less for a ferry crossing

Sailings are the most seasonal thing we sell and the least elastic within a week. Both curves are measured across our busiest crossings.

  • Book ahead for the sailing, not for the fareThe median fare is lowest 30 days out at €28.12 against €85.04 the day before, a spread of 67 per cent. The stronger reason to book early on the water is that a popular crossing sells out long before its fare moves.
  • The week matters less on the waterTuesday is the cheapest day to sail and Friday the dearest, 32 per cent apart. That is a narrower spread than the land modes carry, because a sailing runs to the tide and the season rather than to the commute.
  • A short crossing is a fixed priceShort crossing sailings of around 35 km sit near €11.88 regardless of when you buy. On these the decision is the departure time and whether you are taking a vehicle, not the fare.
  • The price you see is the priceEvery fare on this page is the total. Base fare, taxes, supplier charges and our service fee are all in it, itemised on the breakdown rather than added at the end.

Crossings, by what they actually are

A twenty minute strait and an overnight sea crossing are both a ferry ticket. Our network sorted by distance, with what each kind costs in time, money and carbon.

Bands are set by the distance between the two cities. Times, fares and emissions are the median of a sample priced by the same engine that answers a search, for a date four weeks out, one adult, no discount card. The longest journey of this kind we sell is 894 km.

The boat against the alternatives, where there are any

On 20 crossings another mode reaches the same place. Same corridors, same day, medians for each.

Across the 20 corridors where both run, a crossing emits about a 3.7 th of what the same journey by Flight emits.

Every row is a median over the same corridors, priced on the same day, for one adult with no discount card. Door to door adds the time we budget to reach and leave the terminal at each end, which is where the scheduled time and the real time part company.

Sailing, practically

  • Check in closes earlyWe add 45 minutes at each end of a crossing for the port. It sits between the rail allowance and the airport one, and foot passengers are usually asked to be at the terminal well before the vehicles are.
  • The port is not always the townAmong the 645 places on this network, several harbours sit some way from the centre they are named after. The terminal is named on the offer.
  • A vehicle changes the bookingThe 151 lines here price a car, a bike and a foot passenger separately, and a vehicle space is the thing that runs out first in high season.
  • Weather is a real variableOn crossings past 894 km a cancelled sailing is a day, not an hour. Where the same journey can be made another way, the comparison table above is worth reading before you commit.

Ferry tickets: your questions

How far ahead should I book a ferry?

The fare is lowest about 30 days out, but availability is the real constraint. Popular summer crossings sell out while the fare is still at its floor.

How many ferry crossings can I book here?

16,796 directed crossings between 645 ports in 54 countries, sailed by 151 lines.

Can I take a car?

On most of these routes, yes, and it is priced separately from the passenger. Vehicle space is the first thing to go in high season.

Which day is cheapest to sail?

Tuesday across our network, though the spread across a week is narrower on the water than it is on land.

Is the fare the total?

Yes. Port charges, the line's booking charge and our service fee are already inside every figure here and itemised before payment.
