Australian rail passes
A pass. You buy a number of travel days and then use participating services in Australia without buying a ticket for each journey.

The detail below is quoted from the issuer's own page in the language they publish it in. We do not translate another company's conditions, because a translated condition is a condition we have changed.
- What it covers
- The Discovery Pass covers NSW TrainLink Regional trains and coaches to more than 365 destinations across New South Wales, plus connections into Victoria (Melbourne), Queensland (Brisbane, Gold Coast) and the ACT. It does not cover Sydney Trains or Intercity commuter services except when used to connect to a regional service. Journey Beyond, the current trading name of the former Great Southern Rail, operates named long-distance trains (The Ghan, Indian Pacific, Great Southern, The Overland) sold as single journeys or fixed holiday packages; it has no unlimited-travel or multi-trip pass product.
- Who can buy it
- Discovery Pass: available to adult and child fare categories; non-transferable, tied to the original purchaser. Journey Beyond trains: no special eligibility, standard ticket/package purchase.
- How long it lasts
- Discovery Pass options: 14 days, 1 month, 3 months or 6 months, Economy or First Class (First Class at a 20 percent surcharge). Validity begins on the date of the first booked trip and that start date cannot be changed once set; it is non-refundable. Journey Beyond has no pass, only scheduled single departures and multi-day journey packages of fixed length.
- What it costs
- Discovery Pass adult Economy prices published by Transport for NSW at time of check: from AUD 232 (14 days), AUD 275 (1 month), AUD 298 (3 months), AUD 420 (6 months); child fares roughly half. These are the issuer's own current published figures but are subject to change without notice.
- Seat reservations
- Yes for both. The Discovery Pass is explicitly not a ticket: every trip must be booked and reserved separately online, by phone or through an agent, using the pass as an entitlement rather than a ticket. Journey Beyond trains are fully reserved, assigned-seat/cabin services.
- What catches people out
- Discovery Pass: must be validated by first travel within 6 months of purchase, is not valid for unlimited use on Sydney's metropolitan Intercity network, and overnight trips can extend one day past the pass expiry. Journey Beyond services are premium tourist trains with scarce, advance-sold capacity; travellers expecting an Australia-wide 'rail pass' in the European sense will not find one for these long-distance trains, only for the NSW regional network.
