The issuer's own terms

The detail below is quoted from the issuer's own page in the language they publish it in. We do not translate another company's conditions, because a translated condition is a condition we have changed.

What it covers
A discount card usable on Renfe's own network within Spain: AVE and Larga Distancia (long distance), Avant, Media Distancia (regional) and Cercanías services. It is not a pass, it applies a percentage discount to normal Renfe fares when the card number is added at booking.
Who can buy it
Available to anyone over 60 years old. Renfe's discounts pages separately list a disability-based discount, but the Tarjeta Dorada itself as described on this page is an over-60 card; it must be bought in person at a station, sales office or authorised travel agency, and is personal and non-transferable.
How long it lasts
Sold for 1, 2 or 3 years from issue. Can be renewed online from 90 days before its expiry date.
What it costs
6 euros for 1 year, 12 euros for 2 years, 15 euros for 3 years, as published by Renfe.
Seat reservations
Not applicable to the card itself; it is a fare discount added to an ordinary ticket, so normal Renfe reservation and seat-assignment rules for the train type apply.
What catches people out
Discount rate depends on the service: 25% off AVE and Larga Distancia, 25% off Avant on weekdays and 40% at weekends, 40% off Media Distancia. It cannot be combined with the round-trip (ida y vuelta) discount or most other promotional discounts, except certain large-family discounts where legally allowed. First issue must be done in person, only renewal can be done online.

What this does to an Orlero price

Nothing, yet. Our fares are point to point and are not adjusted for a pass or a card you hold. Use this page to work out whether the scheme is worth buying, and use search to find out what the same journeys cost without it.

  • Spain Rail Pass

    Issued by Renfe

A pass. You buy a number of travel days and then use participating services in Spain without buying a ticket for each journey.

Plan a trip from here

A pass only pays for itself against the journeys you actually make. Ask Ori for the trip and it will price the point to point fares our network holds, which is the number a pass has to beat.
