Where these numbers come from
Every figure on this page is computed from the same engine that answers the search box, at the moment the page was built. Two pages cannot disagree because there is only one calculation.
Inventory
Schedules, seat counts and fares are generated by our own model until the supplier contracts are signed. Places, coordinates, operators, which operator serves which pair, and every distance are real. We would rather say that on every page than let a modeled number pass for a filed one.
Door to door
Journey times include reaching the terminal and leaving it at the far end, modeled at 95 minutes for an airport, 45 for a ferry port and 22 for a station or bus stop, plus any connection.
Fares
Fares are the cheapest total we sell for one passenger, including taxes, supplier fees and our service fee. They move with lead time, day of the week and season, which is what the three charts on this page measure.
Carbon
Carbon is per passenger for the whole journey, by mode and distance, with separate factors for high speed rail and long haul flights.
Distances
Straight line distances are computed from the two places' real coordinates. Route distances add the detour factor the mode actually carries, which is why a rail figure is longer than the line on the map.
The booking window
The curve is the same search run at one, three, seven, fourteen, twenty one, thirty, forty five, sixty and ninety days ahead. The week is the median of three real weeks. The year is the fifteenth of each of the next six months.
Catchment
Distance bands are straight line, from real coordinates, over every route into this place that we sell. The bands are fixed rather than percentile, so two places on this site are comparable.
Evidence
Observed service. A carrier record shows this named operator serving this named pair, and we carry that through unchanged.
Derived from service area. No carrier record names this exact pair. The operators listed publish a service area covering both places at a distance their mode plausibly carries people, which is evidence that the corridor is served and not evidence of a specific service. Pages state which, because presenting the two as the same thing would be dishonest.
