- Buy early, and know when early stops helpingThe median fare bottoms out around 30 days before departure at €19.04, against €49.57 for a ticket bought the day before. That is 62 percent, and the curve is flat well before it, so there is no advantage in booking a year out.
- Move the day, not the hourTuesday is the cheapest day to travel on our rail network and Saturday the most expensive, a gap of 37 percent on the median fare. Shifting a leisure trip by one day is usually worth more than any fare hunting.
- Short hops are priced differentlyRegional services, around 72 km, sit near €11.88 whenever you buy them. Buying in advance pays on the long corridors; on the short ones the walk-up fare is close to the best fare.

Rail is four different products sharing one word. The table is our own network sorted by how far each trip goes, because that is what actually changes the train, the fare and the day.

Bands are set by the distance between the two cities. Times, fares and emissions are the median of a sample priced by the same engine that answers a search, for a date four weeks out, one adult, no discount card. The longest trip of this kind we sell is 1,117 km.

On 20 corridors we sell more than one way to make the trip. These are the medians for each, on the same corridors and the same day.

Across the 20 corridors where both run, a train trip emits about a 16.9 th of what the same trip by Flight emits.
Every row is a median over the same corridors, priced on the same day, for one adult with no discount card. Door to door adds the time we budget to reach and leave the terminal at each end, which is where the scheduled time and the real time diverge.
Train travel, practically
- Scheduled time is not trip timeWe add 22 minutes at each end of a rail trip for getting to the platform and out of the station. It is the smallest access allowance of any mode, and it is most of why rail wins on corridors where the flight is faster in the air.
- Stations are downtownThe 5,922 cities on this network are reached at their central stations, not at an airport outside them. The transfer you do not have to make is the one that never goes wrong.
- One ticket or two is a real decisionA trip split across two operators is two contracts. If the first runs late the second is not obliged to carry you, so a single through fare is worth paying a little more for on a tight connection.
- Luggage is not a line itemNone of the 458 rail operators here charges for a bag you can carry. That is a real difference in the total once a low fare elsewhere has had two suitcases added to it.

How far in advance should I book a train ticket?
About 30 days. On our network the median fare is lowest 30 days out and 62 percent higher the day before departure. Buying earlier than that changes very little.
Which day of the week is cheapest to travel by train?
Tuesday, on our data. The gap between the cheapest and most expensive day is larger on rail than the difference most people find by comparing sites.
