- What it covers
- NS Flex is NS's pay-as-you-go travel account for Dutch trains, used by checking in and out with a linked OV-chipkaart or bank/debit card; there is no preloaded balance, and rides are billed afterwards. NS Flex Basis carries no monthly fee and no discount. NS Flex Dal Voordeel adds a 40 percent discount on NS and other train operators' services within the Netherlands during off-peak hours, weekends and public holidays; it explicitly gives no discount on bus, metro or tram. Other NS Flex variants exist with higher subscription fees for broader discounts, but Basis and Dal Voordeel are the two named in this entry.
- Who can buy it
- Open to residents and non-residents alike; a discounted version of Dal Voordeel is free for young people aged 12 to 17, with a parent or guardian as the contract holder, and it converts automatically to the standard paid subscription once the young person turns 18.
- How long it lasts
- Continuous monthly subscription, automatically renewing; NS Flex Basis has no minimum term since it carries no fee, and Dal Voordeel can be changed to Basis or cancelled at any time after the first month.
- What it costs
- NS Flex Dal Voordeel: 6.35 EUR per month for adults as published for 2026 on the official NS site, free for ages 12-17. NS Flex Basis: no subscription fee. Figures are those NS publishes for the current year and are stated by NS to be subject to annual change.
- Seat reservations
- Not applicable in the way high-speed rail reservations work; however, the discount only applies if the traveller checks in during an off-peak window, so check-in time determines whether the discount is granted.
- What catches people out
- The discount is decided by check-in time only, so starting a journey a few minutes inside peak hours loses the off-peak discount for that whole trip. No discount applies to bus, tram or metro even though these use the same OV-chipkaart system. For the youth variant, the parent/guardian remains the contract holder and receives the billing.
